The Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) faces a leadership transition as President and CEO Kevin O'Brien has announced his intention to step down on January 31, 2025. O'Brien informed IMUA's officers during a recent Executive Committee meeting of his decision to leave after 14 years at the helm.
IMUA is a prominent trade association representing the commercial inland marine insurance industry, serving 54 member insurance companies, 45 associate members, and over 4,000 employees. Under O'Brien's leadership, the organization has experienced significant growth, with membership reaching an all-time high, including the addition of five national brokers. The Annual Meeting, the industry's premier educational symposium, has seen attendance more than double from 200 to over 400 participants.
One of O'Brien's most notable achievements is the introduction of all-access remote education and e-learning programs. The All Access Learning platform offers complimentary remote and virtual education, positioning IMUA as a leader in professional development. "When I assumed this role, I set out with two primary goals: to establish IMUA as the standard for professional development within the industry and to strengthen the organization's financial foundation," O'Brien stated. "I'm proud of what we've accomplished."
O'Brien's tenure has also strengthened the association's financial stability, providing a solid base for future initiatives. IMUA is set to launch a new Association Management System (AMS) alongside an integrated Learning Management System (LMS), which O'Brien believes will further enhance IMUA's capabilities and services.
The implications of this leadership change are significant for the inland marine insurance industry. As the national association representing over 90 percent of all commercial inland marine insurers, IMUA's direction affects the entire sector. O'Brien's departure opens the door for new leadership to navigate challenges such as technological disruption and evolving risk landscapes while building on the foundation of expanded educational offerings and financial strength.
Founded in 1930, IMUA provides members with professional development programs, research papers, bulletins, and industry analysis. The organization's growth under O'Brien has raised standards for professional development and education across the industry. As the search for his successor begins, stakeholders will be watching to see how the next leader continues to innovate and serve the industry.
