UN Poverty Day Commemoration in New York Spotlights Housing as a Human Right

The 34th Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York on October 16, drawing international organizations, diplomats, advocates, community leaders, and civil society representatives to confront the links between poverty, human dignity, social justice, and the right to housing. Although the day is officially observed on October 17, the event was held a day earlier, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

Star Cleopatra Fitzgerald® attended wearing a red United Nations Gender Equality lanyard as a symbol of peace, inclusion, and equal opportunity. That gesture reflected the event’s broader message that reducing inequality, promoting human rights, and advancing gender equality are integral to eradicating poverty and building just, inclusive societies. Speakers repeatedly stressed that safe, affordable housing is foundational to health, education, employment, and overall well-being, and that homelessness and housing insecurity can trap families in cycles of poverty, deepen inequality, and damage mental and physical health. Access to decent work, affordable housing, clean water, electricity, heating, and adequate nutrition should be treated as basic necessities, not privileges, they said.

Participants examined mounting global housing pressures, including population growth, conflict, displacement, urbanization, environmental degradation, climate change, natural disasters, poor governance, and social exclusion. War, insecurity, human rights violations, heavy rainfall, soil erosion, and forced migration continue to displace vulnerable populations and strain housing systems, yet solidarity and cooperation remain powerful tools for long-term solutions.

Personal testimonies added a human dimension. One speaker described the difficulty of raising seven children while struggling with inadequate housing, illustrating how stable shelter underpins family security. Others argued that people experiencing poverty should not be criminalized or penalized for their circumstances; instead, governments and institutions were urged to develop practical policies, opportunities, and support systems that help individuals secure stable housing and improve their lives.

Fitzgerald noted that housing should not be forced but should remain an option for those who seek it, and that housing environments must be safe, secure, and free from violence, criminal activity, drug abuse, prostitution, corruption, and other conditions that endanger residents or undermine community well-being. Unsafe housing can leave residents vulnerable to coercion, forced prostitution, trafficking, and other crimes, making resident safety a fundamental priority. People should seek assistance through available housing programs and emergency shelters, NYC 311 Services, Department of Homeless Services Emergency Intake Centers, Homebase Prevention Offices, NYC Housing Connect and HPD Portal, Domestic Violence Crisis Hotlines, Family Court Help Centers and Legal Aid Clinics, Human Resources Administration Job Centers and SNAP Offices, Administration for Children’s Services and Family Support Centers, Department for the Aging Network, Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Resources, and community-based nonprofit networks and social services.

Patrick Lubin delivered an inspiring address on peace of mind and personal security, describing the challenges faced by individuals living amid crime, substance abuse, and instability while reaffirming that all people deserve safe, dignified living conditions. Speakers repeatedly said housing should not be denied because of unemployment or financial hardship, and no one should be forced to live in unsafe conditions.

Former French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont reflected on Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, describing how the values of the French Republic align with international efforts to promote dignity, equality, and solidarity. He pinpointed the importance of political commitment, social progress, and respect for economic, social, cultural, and civil rights in advancing the vision of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and he spoke about the roles of public servants, community leaders, private initiatives, and concerned citizens in closing the gap between wealth and poverty.

Moderated by Bani Dugal and Thani Brown, the event was made possible by a coalition including ATD Fourth World International, the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN-Habitat, LP4Y, MAIN, and the Bahá’í International Community. Following the formal program, attendees gathered in the UN North Garden at the commemorative stone dedicated to victims of extreme poverty, observed a moment of collective silence, and joined in a unity song. The commemoration concluded with a shared commitment to human dignity, social justice, equality, and poverty eradication, reminding participants that addressing poverty requires collective action, sound policies, and sustained commitment so every individual can live in safety, dignity, and hope. A UN Video of the event is available for those seeking further detail.
