TRON DAO, a community-governed decentralized autonomous organization, recently hosted a successful TRON Builder Tour hackathon at Columbia University. The event, co-hosted by Blockchain at Columbia and Boston University Blockchain, drew over 120 participants from renowned institutions such as Harvard, Boston University, NYU, Berkeley, Columbia, University of Waterloo, and Princeton.
The 12-hour hackathon, held on October 5, 2024, provided students with an opportunity to develop decentralized applications (dApps) on the TRON blockchain. Participants competed across four tracks: DeFi, Artistry, Integration, and Web3, showcasing a diverse range of innovative projects.
Experienced developers and early builders from the TRON community served as mentors, offering valuable guidance to students throughout the event. Notable mentors included Dwayne Gordon, founder of a TRON community project, Eder Teixeira, a TRON Super Representative, and Wes Jorgensen from Boston University Blockchain.
The hackathon's success underscores TRON DAO's commitment to advancing blockchain education and fostering innovation within academic communities. This event follows previous successful TRON Builder Tour stops at prestigious institutions like MIT, Cornell, Princeton, and Harvard.
In the DeFi track, which focused on transforming finance through decentralization, the top three projects were Stakecess, TEAMDR, and PrisonCoin. The Artistry track, highlighting creative projects in GameFi, NFTs, and the Metaverse, saw Monkey Lotto, NoCapMaps, and MetaForge emerge as winners.
The Integration track challenged participants to incorporate existing protocols or services into the TRON ecosystem. TRONFundYou and Swap Squad secured the top two positions in this category. In the Web3 track, which aimed to bridge the gap between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0, the AI Bot project by TRON Support AI claimed victory.
This event is part of TRON DAO's broader initiative to engage with the developer community and promote blockchain innovation. Concurrently, TRON DAO is running HackaTRON Season 7, a competition that challenges innovators to create solutions leveraging the TRON blockchain across multiple tracks.
The TRON network has shown significant growth since its MainNet launch in May 2018. As of October 2024, it boasts over 263 million total user accounts, more than 8.6 billion total transactions, and over $16 billion in total value locked (TVL). TRON also hosts the largest circulating supply of USD Tether (USDT) stablecoin globally, surpassing Ethereum since April 2021.
In a landmark development, TRON was designated as the national blockchain for the Commonwealth of Dominica in October 2022, marking the first partnership between a major public blockchain and a sovereign nation for national blockchain infrastructure development.
The success of the TRON Builder Tour at Columbia University and the ongoing HackaTRON competition demonstrate TRON DAO's dedication to fostering blockchain talent and driving innovation in the decentralized technology space. As the blockchain industry continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a crucial role in shaping the future of decentralized finance and Web3 technologies.
