Dr. Glen Gillen, a leading figure in neurological rehabilitation, is reminding the healthcare industry that behind every diagnosis is a human being. In a recent statement, the retired Columbia University professor emphasized that while technology can enhance care, it must never replace the human relationship at its core.
Dr. Gillen, who has helped thousands of stroke survivors regain independence and trained generations of occupational therapists, believes that meaningful care begins when patients feel seen, heard, and respected. "No one should ever feel reduced to a diagnosis, a medical chart, or a number," he said.
His career spans more than three decades at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he served as a full Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine. He has authored over 200 scholarly publications and foundational textbooks, including Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach and multiple editions of Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy.
Dr. Gillen's philosophy is grounded in partnership rather than hierarchy. He advocates for a model of care that values empathy, conversation, and mutual respect. His own experiences navigating the healthcare system reinforced his belief that listening is one of the most powerful forms of care.

"My greatest hope is that the next generation of healthcare professionals never loses sight of the person sitting in front of them," he said. "The best care is both clinically sound and deeply human. That is what makes it meaningful."
