Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Partners with Downtown Music Publishing to Manage Jazz Legend's Legacy

The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation (LAEF) announced a new licensing agreement with Downtown Music Publishing to strengthen international management of the jazz legend's intellectual property. The partnership, effective immediately, aims to balance legacy preservation with rights management in today's evolving entertainment landscape while generating support for the foundation's educational programs.

"This agreement reflects our commitment to honoring Louis Armstrong's legacy with integrity, vision and respect," said Jackie Harris, LAEF Executive Director. The foundation, founded by Louis and Lucille Armstrong in 1969 to "give back to the world some of the goodness he received," maintains its mission of supporting musicians, jazz education, performances and programming worldwide.

Downtown Music Publishing will serve as the foundation's licensing and administration partner, overseeing authorized use of Armstrong's intellectual property across music, media and all other platforms. Jedd Katrancha, Chief Creative Officer of Downtown Music Publishing, stated, "Downtown Music Publishing is honored to work with the LAEF and support their mission of education, giving, and advocating for the legacy of the most impactful musician in American history."

The partnership represents a strategic move to expand global reach while maintaining the integrity of Armstrong's legacy. As described by the foundation, Armstrong remains "the most important creative force in the early development and perpetuation of America's music, Jazz" whose influence "is universal, unmatched, and very much alive today."

Downtown Music Publishing brings extensive global expertise in catalog administration, sync, licensing, and rights services through its network that includes Songtrust and Downtown Music Publishing Africa. This infrastructure will help the foundation expand opportunities for mission-aligned uses of Armstrong's music and trademarks. The collaboration seeks to connect more global audiences to Armstrong's pioneering body of work while ensuring proper stewardship. By working with Downtown, the foundation aims to generate vital support for its educational programs, grants, and cultural initiatives through thoughtful licensing arrangements. The partnership underscores the ongoing relevance of Armstrong's legacy in contemporary culture while establishing frameworks for its responsible management in digital and global contexts.
