AI Dominates Forbes' 2025 Next Billion-Dollar Startups List, Signaling a Shift in Venture Capital Focus

The 2025 edition of Forbes' Next Billion-Dollar Startups list underscores the burgeoning role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of startups, with a staggering 20 out of the 25 featured U.S.-based companies centering their operations around AI. This year's selection, a result of a meticulous nomination and evaluation process in partnership with TrueBridge Capital Partners, showcases AI's expansive reach across healthcare, accounting, defense, and creative industries, among others.

Forbes' track record with the Next Billion-Dollar Startups list is notable, with over half of its past alumni achieving unicorn status. The publication highlights that out of 250 alumni, 140 have become unicorns, including well-known names like DoorDash, Figma, and Anduril. This year's list, which focuses on U.S. venture-backed companies valued under $1 billion, emphasizes founders' vision, early traction, investor backing, and projected 2024 revenues, even for those with currently modest sales figures.

Among the standout startups is Boston's AcuityMD, which leverages de-identified data to assist manufacturers in targeting the right physicians for their products. New York's contributions include Agentio, a marketplace connecting brands with influencers, and Graphite, which offers an AI assistant to streamline code reviews. The Los Angeles area is represented by Apex, a small-satellite manufacturer with Department of Defense contracts, and Stan, a platform enabling online personalities to monetize their fame through integrated storefronts.

Maryland's sole entry, Forterra, has secured a $93 million contract from the U.S. Army for mine-clearing robots and is involved in developing self-driving missile launchers for the Marines. With such diverse applications, the 2025 Forbes list not only highlights the innovative potential of AI but also its capacity to redefine industries and create substantial economic value.
